When Dick Williams first heard about NSP, he was on the other
side of the health business...selling cemetery plots
door-to-door.
For 25 years, Dick had made the best of this unusual
occupation. He was a good salesman, but it still took nearly
seven days a week to make ends meet.
Then [NSP Sr. National Manager] Ed Bashaw invited Dick to
lunch, telling him about natural health and offering to pick
up the check. That was enough to get Dick to agree to host an
Herbal Hour that coming Sunday.
Convincing his wife Joy was another matter. At the time, she
was working as a surgical nurse at two nearby hospitals,
spending nearly 70 hours per week on the job. With their
schedules, Sundays were the only day the couple spent
together, and Joy was very protective of that time.
"He told me Ed was coming over. What's more, he said he'd
invited 15 friends. I gave him one of those 'Why did you do
that?' looks," Joy said. Dick promised the meeting would
only last an hour, and Joy reluctantly agreed.
"When the meeting began, I told everyone that there
wouldn't be another meeting. I simply felt a sincere
responsibility to these 15 close friends to share with them
what Ed had told me," Dick said.
The one hour stretched into four by the time the last person
left. But Ed had helped the Williams' break out as Managers,
even though they didn't realize it at the time.
A few weeks later, they received a check for $360 from NSP.
Dick changed his mind about holding a second meeting. Their
second bonus check was more than $700. Dick turned to Joy and
said, "If we can double this a few more times, we'll
really be on to something."
As his herb business continued to grow, Dick's bosses in
cemetery sales became more and more difficult. Finally, they
gave him an ultimatum - "It's us or the herbs."
Dick chose the herbs.
"I had my customer list [from cemetery plot sales]. I
went back, and my opening line was 'How would you like to not
use your burial property?' That was very motivating to
them," Dick said.
He also discovered that his NSP sponsor had blazed an
easy-to-follow trail for success. "I have followed Ed
Bashaw's example step for step. I've tried to duplicate his
efforts. There's not too much difference in the way we
operate," Dick said.
Following the example of success is something Dick has taught
to Managers in his downline, too. "I've seen Dick and Joy
attain a lot of goals and have a lot of dreams come true. They
convey that that's possible for other people. Now, I'm seeing
some of that happen to me. It's exciting to help other people
and see our own dreams come true," said Area Manager
Becky Holland.
Becky credits Dick with helping her not only to set goals, but
also to reach them. The Williams' are still very
goal-oriented. "Dick is a goal-setter; you have to reach
in order to achieve. The day Dick and I reached National
Manager, we set another goal - to become Senior National
Managers," Joy said.
Being forthright and honest with others is another Williams
trait. "Dick is not afraid to talk to people in a way
that's going to serve them. I've heard him say many times,
'You can't have health on your own terms.' He tells people the
truth about taking responsibility for their own health,"
Becky said.
When Dick can't convince individuals about the importance of
natural health, the herbs usually can.
"You know, Dick, I just don't believe you. I think you're
a quack!" said Tracie Gorkiewiez, who worked at a camera
shop Dick frequented, after he told her about the nutritional
benefits of herbs.
"Well, take these, and let me know what you think,"
he replied.
A few days later, Tracie called. "I need some more of
these things. They're really working!"
Today, Tracie is an NSP Manager.
"Dick has taught me to treat customers as your friends,
as you would like to be treated. He is such a hard-working
man, and Joy is right behind him. They are definitely a
team," Tracie said. Their teamwork includes teaching
others about NSP's compensation plan and earnings opportunity,
not just about herbs and natural health.
"Nobody is NSP seems to want to talk about the money, but
I always want to know. To me, the earnings potential is
empowering. I'm in this business for the money; I know I can
do more good with money than without," Dick said.
"Before Nature's Sunshine, I was heading toward a mundane
future. That all changed with NSP. I think I have helped
contribute to the prosperity of others, too. And I don't feel
we're anywhere near where we're going to be," he said.
